“His attention to detail failed, however, when it came to checking the background of his hit man.
“Spyropoulos went to great lengths to ensure his uncle would be murdered, providing the hit man with a gun, a down payment, photos of his uncle and even a Google map to the uncle’s house,” said Director Elie Honig of the Division of Criminal Justice. “Fortunately, law and order – in the form of the New Jersey State Police – prevailed in this case, and his elaborate plot to have his uncle tortured and murdered has instead ended in a lengthy prison sentence for Spyropoulos.”
“If vicious, vindictive men like Georgios Spyropoulos held sway, we would live in a much more violent world,” said Acting Attorney General Hoffman. He further admitted that he asked the hit man – who turned out to be an undercover detective for the New Jersey State Police – to threaten the uncle first in order to obtain information that Spyropoulos intended to use to rob his uncle of a large sum of money he believed his uncle possessed. In pleading guilty, Spyropoulos admitted that he hired a hit man to kill his uncle. Supervising Deputy Attorney General Lauren Scarpa Yfantis, Chief of the Gangs & Organized Crime Bureau, and Deputy Attorney General Annmarie Taggart, Deputy Bureau Chief, prosecuted the case and handled the sentencing for the Division of Criminal Justice.
At the time of his guilty plea, Spyropoulos signed a consent order that prohibits him from ever having any contact with the victim, the victim’s family or any of the family’s businesses in the future. He pleaded guilty on July 14 to a first-degree charge of conspiracy to commit murder. In addition, he will be subject to five years of supervised release after he completes the prison sentence. Georgios Spyropoulos is currently being held on $1 million bail in Passaic County Prison in Paterson, N.J.Georgios Spyropoulos, 46, of Clifton, was sentenced to eight years in state prison, including nearly seven years of parole ineligibility under the No Early Release Act, by Superior Court Judge Ernest M. The family is originally from Athens, Greece, and both men reside in Clifton. He also allegedly threatened two waitresses, telling one that she would be "buried alive" if she reported a complaint against him. When he was arrested, Spyropoulos was found in possession of multiple firearms when he was arrested. He was also allegedly not happy with the cut of the Tick Tock's profits he was receiving as evidenced by the attempted theft. The manager of the Route 3 Tick Tock allegedly was understatedly angry at his uncle for the control Sgourdos held over the diner despite Spyropoulos' management. He also said he "didn't give an " if Sgourdos' wife was maimed in the attack. Georgios Spryropoulos told the "hitman" to torture Sgourdos until he gave up the combination to the safe, which Sgourdos lawyers say doesn't even exist. He had allegedly studied his uncle's daily movements, and had them down to a "T" to the point that Spyropoulos knew the fashion in which Uncle Alexandros parked his car in front of his Clifton, N.J. Spyropoulos specified that Sgourdos deceased body was to be well-hidden so that investigators would believe the Tick Tock Diner's co-owner had simply gone missing.
